In the new Premier League season, one of Manchester City’s most expensive signings — Jack Grealish — has joined Everton on loan. The attacking midfielder will wear the number 18 shirt for the Toffees and has shared the story behind his choice with fans.
Inspiration — Rooney and Gascoigne
According to Grealish, choosing the number 18 was no coincidence:
— There’s a special reason for taking this number. There were other options, but my two favourite English players — Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne — both played for Everton wearing the number 18. As soon as I learned this, I decided on it. Before joining, I spoke with Rooney, and I think he was happy with my choice, — said Grealish.
Past journey and record transfer
The 29-year-old is an academy graduate of Aston Villa. In the summer of 2021, Manchester City signed him for a record fee in English football — €117.5 million — marking a new chapter for both the player and the club.
Contract and future
Grealish’s current contract with City runs until 30 June 2026. If no new deal is signed by then, he will be free to join any club of his choice next summer as a free agent.
Fans are sure to watch Grealish’s performances for Everton with great interest, especially since the number 18 that inspired him could write another bright page in the Toffees’ history.
