The famous Brazilian club «Fluminense» has set another historic record with their goalkeeper Fabio. This time, his name entered the list of players with the most professional matches, drawing even more attention from fans.
In the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against the Colombian club «America De Cali», the 44-year-old goalkeeper started the match in the main lineup. «Fluminense» won the game 2:0, marking a new historic achievement in Fabio's career.
This was Fabio’s 1391st match, surpassing the legendary English goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who played 1390 professional games. Shilton’s career spanned from 1966 to 1997, and he retired at the age of 49.
Fabio began his journey in football in 1997, debuting in senior football with the club «Uniao Bandeirante». In 2000, he won his first national championship with «Vasco da Gama». Later, in 2013 and 2014, he won two more championships with «Cruzeiro».
Most of Fabio’s career, specifically 795 games, was spent at «Cruzeiro». Since 2022, he has been playing for «Fluminense», achieving significant success with the club. In 2023, Fabio won the Copa Libertadores – the main club tournament in South America, and in 2024, he won the South American Super Cup.
His personal achievements are also noteworthy. He was named the best player of the Brazilian championship in 2010 and 2013. Additionally, in 2004, Fabio was part of the Brazilian national team that won the Copa America, although he did not play any matches in the tournament.
One of the goalkeeper’s first major international achievements was winning the Under-17 World Cup in 1997.
Fabio setting a record at 44, his consistency on the field, long-term efficiency, and professionalism continue to command great respect and admiration from football fans.
