In Portugal, the memory of beloved football stars - Diogo Jota and Jorge Costa - was honored with high state awards.
The country's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, has decided to award the deceased footballers the commander's rank of the Order of Merit. These awards were presented to their close relatives at a solemn ceremony. According to the Portuguese Football Federation, this is a recognition of their unforgettable contributions to the country's football.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also presented Jota and Costa with a special honorary badge "For Services in the Field of Sport." The awards were presented to his relatives at a ceremony dedicated to Jota's memory. The Portuguese national team players also participated in this event, remembering their colleagues with respect.
As a reminder, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Teixeira da Silva, who played for Portuguese second division club Penafiel, were killed in a road accident in Spain on July 3rd of this year.
Former legendary Porto defender Jorge Costa also died of a heart attack on August 5th. The football world remembers him with great respect and gratitude.
The contributions of Jota and Costa, valuable figures for Portuguese football, are forever etched in the country's history.
