One of the former elite referees, Alfonso Perez Burrul, commented on the second penalty awarded in the Champions League match between Real Madrid and Marseille. According to him, a very harsh decision was made against the defender in this episode, and the awarding of a penalty was inappropriate.
As a reminder, this decisive match, played in the first round, ended with a score of 1:2 in favor of Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappé scored both goals from a penalty and didn't miss a single one. The situation in the 79th minute also sparked widespread discussion. In this situation, Marseille defender Fakundo Medina attempted to receive the ball from Vinicius through a submission, but the ball touched his hand. Referee Irfan Pelto assessed the move as a hand rule and awarded an 11-meter free kick.
However, Burrul did not agree with this decision:
"I think this situation was a natural move. The defender fell and put his hand to defend. It's clear he didn't deliberately touch the ball. Therefore, it was wrong to award a penalty here," he told reporters.
Burroul's idea sparked heated debates among football fans. Some defend the referee's decision, while others agree with the former referee, arguing that it was unfair to Marseille.
It's widely known that in matches involving big clubs like Real Madrid, any controversial episode leads to heated discussions. There was no exception this time either.
It is expected that UEFA experts may also express their opinion on this situation. At the same time, Marseille fans expressed dissatisfaction with this controversial decision, saying it had a serious impact on the team.
It's not unlikely that this match will be long-lasting, but one thing is certain - in the Champions League competition, every decision can affect not only the fate of the game but also the results of the entire group.
