English defender Kyle Walker described his temporary loan move from Manchester City to Milan last season as the “most selfish step” of his career. In an interview with Sky Sports, he admitted that the club was in a difficult situation at that time and that, as captain, he should have stayed with the team.
“At that time I was the captain. So when the team was struggling, I had to be by their side. Looking back, I shouldn’t have left. In that decision I thought only about myself — it was a selfish decision,” Walker said.
Midway through last season, Walker headed to Italy due to a lack of game time. However, at Milan he couldn’t fully show himself because of both results and injuries, and the club decided in the summer not to buy him on a permanent basis.
In the summer transfer window, Walker joined a new Premier League team — Burnley. According to him, the main goal is to give everything to help his new club stay in the elite division.
Walker’s candid admission once again showed how important the balance between personal interests and team responsibility is for a footballer.
