Ian Wright Defends Bellingham: "People Are Not Ready for Black Stars"

The recent trajectory of England national team midfielder Jude Bellingham's career has been somewhat uneven. In June, head coach Thomas Tuchel referred to some of Bellingham's actions as "alarming."

Later, Tuchel expressed regret over his comments, clarifying that they had been misunderstood and that he had been unable to sleep well after a defeat at the time. In September, Bellingham was not called to the national team as he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

In October, his name was also absent from the squad, following a decision by Tuchel. This situation sparked rumors of disagreements between the player and the coach.

By November, Bellingham returned to the national team, but he faced criticism for expressing dissatisfaction after being substituted during a match against Albania. Some even accused him of lacking enthusiasm for the national team's achievements.

Former footballer Ian Wright came to Bellingham's defense, suggesting that elements of racism were at play. "When I was younger, I would hear things like, 'You're not fully English, are you?'" Wright said.

"I would reply, 'No, I am English.' I believe people are not yet ready for a Black superstar.

They appreciate N'Golo Kanté's humility. I'm not saying Kanté is a 'comfortable' person, but his personality is like that.

However, players like Pogba or Bellingham, who bring strong energy and charisma, are not as well-received. Bellingham's strength and charisma seem intimidating to some."

"I am concerned about Jude. Someone accused him of not celebrating national team goals.

That is completely false. People are trying to create problems out of nothing," Wright concluded during the Stick to Football program.
