Northern Ireland national team head coach Michael O'Neil shared his thoughts on the results of the World Cup play-off draw. His team will face Italy away in March 2026.
"A tough opponent. We expected this and need to be prepared.
Italy is a very strong team, but we have to believe that we can achieve this result. If we manage to do it, it will be one of the greatest achievements in our history.
Our team is young, but we believe we can make it," said the coach in an interview with RTE. The Northern Ireland national team finished third in the qualifiers, behind Slovakia and Germany.
They secured their play-off spot thanks to results in the Nations League. The winner of the Italy and Northern Ireland match will face the winner of the Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina fixture in the final.
