Barcelona President Joan Laporta provided an explanation regarding Xavi Hernandez stepping down from his position as the team’s head coach. The Spanish coach managed the "Blaugrana" from 2021 to 2024.
According to Laporta, Xavi announced his decision to leave Barcelona at the end of the season, but later requested a meeting to discuss and reevaluate the situation. "He told me that he wanted to continue his work.
I asked him just one question: 'Xavi, do you believe in this team?' He responded, 'I 100% believe in it; I will make these players champions.’ However, a week later, he told me that he would need two years to build a competitive team.
At that moment, I thought to myself, 'What is going on here?'", Laporta said. The President further stated that later Xavi contacted sporting director Deco, outlining transfer demands and the need to part ways with some players.
Laporta acknowledged that he respects Xavi but admitted the situation greatly impacted him, forcing him to make a difficult decision. Similar decisions had previously been made in cases involving Messi, Alba, and Busquets.
Currently, Hans-Dieter Flick holds the position of Barcelona head coach.
