FIFA Award: Success after Nobel
US President Donald Trump has been awarded a new FIFA Peace Prize. This award ceremony took place in Washington, D.C. during the high-level ceremony of the 2026 World Cup draw.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized that the US president "showed a firm commitment to peace throughout the world." Trump himself called it "one of the greatest honors of my life" and noted that he "saved the lives of millions of people in Congo."
Interestingly, Infantino announced that the Peace Prize was founded just a month ago. Most importantly, the decision to establish the award was made without the consent of the organization's governing body - the FIFA Council, which was a surprising event for the council members.
As a reminder, Infantino previously nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his actions in the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, but he did not succeed.

This is not Trump's first controversial football situation. In July, Infantino presented the US president with the real main trophy of the FIFA Club World Cup, a copy of which was later accepted by the tournament's winner, Chelsea.
After the final, Donald Trump decided to remain in the winning photoshoot even after he stepped onto the field and presented the trophies. His prolonged presence on stage caused quite controversial reactions: some players, including Cole Palmer, felt significant discomfort from such a move by Trump.
Renaming initiative
Interestingly, the US President expressed his intention to change the name of football and American football. In his opinion, football is called "soccer" in the USA, and there is "no basis" for calling the NFL (National Football League) sport "football." Trump emphasized that in American football, players primarily touch the ball with their hands, not their feet. He also considered signing a presidential decree to rename American football.
The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in Canada, the USA, and Mexico, with 48 national teams participating for the first time.
