FIFA has announced the introduction of special breaks during the matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to allow players to hydrate and recover. Matches will be paused by referees in the 22nd minute of the first half and the 22nd minute of the second half.
This decision has been made to protect players' health, as the tournament might take place in high-temperature weather conditions in some instances. Interestingly, these breaks will be applied in all matches, regardless of the presence of air conditioning systems in the stadiums or the actual weather conditions.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Argentina’s national team, the current champion, will defend their title during this tournament.
