Former Russian Premier League referee Aleksandr Yegorov shared his thoughts on the chances of Russian referees being appointed for the final stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to Yegorov, such chances are non-existent.
He emphasized that to officiate at the World Cup, a referee must belong to FIFA’s elite group. This group includes referees who regularly handle matches of national teams, the Champions League, and other major international tournaments.
Currently, Russian referees are not included in this elite group and are not being appointed for European or international tournaments. "Here, the situation is quite straightforward and free of political romance.
Our referees are not only absent from the elite group - they do not even participate in European and global tournaments. Therefore, discussing any chances is pointless: they simply do not exist," Yegorov stated in an interview with Betonmobile.ru.
