PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov's first coach, Alexey Chistyakov, shared his thoughts on the player's performance during the Ligue 1 Round 16 match against Metz (3–2). According to Chistyakov, the Russian goalkeeper constantly faces pressure due to competition for a place in the starting lineup.
The coach emphasized that Safonov's future playing opportunities will largely depend on Lucas Chevalier's situation. “Based on the principles of sport, Safonov should be playing in the starting lineup.
I can't say Matvei is less qualified than Chevalier. Apparently, the Frenchman has a clause in his contract requiring him to start matches,” Chistyakov was quoted as saying by Metaratings.ru.
Chistyakov also noted that Safonov has shown confidence in his recent appearances. He mentioned that the match against Athletic was one of Safonov's best performances in terms of evaluations.
The game against Metz was Safonov’s third match this season. In two of these matches, he managed to keep a clean sheet.
