
Twenty-six-year-old Matvey Safonov became the true hero of the Intercontinental Cup final. The Russian goalkeeper saved four penalties in the shootout, and without his crucial saves, PSG would not have claimed the trophy in their intense match against Brazil’s Flamengo.
After the final whistle, the Paris players congratulated Safonov, lifting him into the air to celebrate. Videos of these moments were shared widely on social media.
As previously reported, PSG matched the record of Josep Guardiola’s Barcelona by winning six trophies in a single year. Safonov has been playing for PSG for the past one and a half years.
