Amorim explains why he changed Manchester United’s formation

Manchester United head coachRuben Amorimshared his views on the changes to the team’s tactical setup. The specialist stressed that the decision was not random, but made in response to the current situation.

In the Premier League match against Newcastle (1:0), Amorim opted to play with four defenders instead of the commonly used three-at-the-back system. The decision also stood out for having a positive impact on the team’s performance.

According to the Portuguese coach, in the early period after taking charge he had already understood that it would not be easy to play consistently in a specific system with the players available.

“That was the start of the process. We tried to shape our own style of play. Now the circumstances have changed: the squad isn’t deep, and options are limited in some positions. That’s why we have to adapt, and the players need to understand why changes are happening,” Amorim said.

He also firmly emphasized that the decision was not made under pressure from the media or the fans.

“If I change the system because the press says so, the players will feel it. In that case, the coach’s job is basically over. I won’t do that,” he continued.

Amorim added that tactical innovations make sense only after the team starts playing confidently within its system. He also openly stated that once all players return, Manchester United will not necessarily keep playing with three at the back on a permanent basis.

So Amorim’s stance is clear: results and available resources are the key criteria behind any tactical decision.
