Maresca has left Chelsea — and the club quickly made a new decision. According to journalist-insider Ben Jacobs, Chelsea U21 head coach Calum McFarlane will take charge of the London side’s first team in the Premier League Round 20 match against Manchester City.
The match will be played on January 4. So Chelsea haven’t switched to a “let’s wait it out” mode — on the contrary, even for one of the toughest games, someone had to take responsibility quickly. For now, that task falls to McFarlane.
Recall that on January 1 the club officially announced the end of its cooperation with Enzo Maresca. It was also stated that the board plans to find a new head coach for the first team in the near future.
As things stand, Chelsea have collected 30 points from 19 matches and sit in 5th place. The gap to leaders Arsenal is significant — 15 points.
In short, the game against City is not just about 3 points for Chelsea — it’s a test of character, spirit, and the answer to “who is the real leader?”. For McFarlane, it’s his first serious exam on the big stage.
