Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Dmitry Vasilev rated PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov’s performance as the brightest achievement for Russian football in 2025. This was reported by euro-football.ru.reports.
Vasilev said he made this choice because Russian clubs have been banned from European cups and other international competitions.
“Matvey was outstanding. It was a real spectacle. In the final he saved four penalties,” Match TV quoted Vasilev as saying.
In the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, Safonov saved four consecutive 11-metre kicks in the post-match penalty shootout against Flamengo.
As a result, he became the first goalkeeper in history to achieve such a feat in official tournaments.
