Senegal celebrates Africa Cup triumph with a national day off

The football celebrations in Senegal continue nationwide. After a dramatic 1–0 win over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal’s president declared January 19 a paid national day off.

Head of state Bassirou Diomaye Faye addressed the Senegalese people, announcing that, in light of the historic result, January 19 will be observed as a paid day off and a public holiday. He said the decision was made to widely celebrate the people’s joy, the team’s hard work, and national pride.

As a result, millions of citizens in Senegal will not go to work today. From villages to major cities, a festive mood is expected across all regions, with songs, flags, and public celebrations marking the national team’s second Africa Cup title.

Football can sometimes change a country’s mood with a single match. For Senegal, this final was more than a trophy—it was the day the nation united, believed, and ultimately showed its joy to the world. Now the thrill of victory continues not only on the pitch, but across the entire country.
