FIFA is considering relocating playoff matches from Mexico

At a time when the security situation in Mexico is escalating, FIFA is considering the possibility of moving the intercontinental playoff matches that Mexico is supposed to host. According to The Athletic, the matter of postponing matches could be on the agenda if security agencies and commercial partners express serious concern.

We are talking about the FIFA World Cup 2026TM Play-Off Tournament, which qualifies for the World Cup - it is planned to be held on March 26-31, and according to the preliminary plan, it should host stadiums in two cities.

A complicating factor is reports of riots, roadblocks, fires, and clashes in some areas following reports of the destruction of the drug cartel leader El Mencho in Mexico. International media reports that these circumstances have further exacerbated the issue of security ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Noteworthy aspect: the issue of transferring games can be a difficult "goal" not only for the sports organization, but also for the fans. Because tens of thousands of fans have already planned their trip, bought tickets, booked hotels - if logistics changes, compensation issues will also arise.

As a reminder, the 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be held from June 11th to July 19th in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Also, according to the calendar, the Uzbekistan national team is scheduled to play its first match at the World Cup in Mexico against Colombia.

In short, there is no decision yet that it will be "transferred," but the main criterion for FIFA is one: guarantees regarding the safety of teams, fans, and participating parties. If guarantees are strengthened - everything is as planned, if not - the playoff geography may change.
