The next week in European club competitions was unsuccessful for English clubs. Nine Premier League clubs participated in the continent's most prestigious tournaments - the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Europa Conference League. However, interestingly, only one of them managed to win these matches.
The only achievement was for Aston Villa, competing in the Europa League. The Birmingham side secured an important advantage ahead of the second leg by defeating Lille OSC 1-0 in a match in France.
For other clubs, however, the results were more complex. Nottingham Forest lost 0-1 to Midtjylland at home in the Europa League. Crystal Palace drew 0-0 with Cypriot AEK Larnaca in the Conference League.
The Champions League results proved even more difficult for the English fans. In Tuesday's match, Tottenham Hotspur lost to Spanish club Atletico Madrid 2-5. Liverpool FC lost 0-1 to Turkish side Galatasaray. Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Spanish giants Barcelona.
The debates on Wednesday were also full of sensational results. Manchester City suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat at home to the renowned Spanish club Real Madrid. Chelsea FC lost to French side Paris Saint-Germain 2-5. At the same time, Arsenal FC failed to defeat German club Bayer Leverkusen and drew 1:1.
Thus, the European Cup week proved to be much harder for English clubs than expected. The fact that only one of the nine teams has won is causing a lot of discussion among fans. Now all attention is focused on the return matches, and the EPL representatives will try to rectify the situation and continue the fight for the next stage.
