Iran to be punished for refusing USA match

The Iranian national football team has announced it may withdraw from the upcoming World Cup despite successfully qualifying for the tournament. The decision stems from ongoing geopolitical tensions, as Iranian officials have expressed reluctance to compete in the United States following recent military actions initiated by the American government.
FIFA has responded to the situation with a stern warning, stating that if Iran officially pulls out of the competition, the country could face severe sporting sanctions. According to reports from RMC Sport, these measures could mirror the restrictions currently imposed on Russian teams, potentially leading to a total ban from all official international football competitions. Furthermore, the Iranian Football Federation could be hit with heavy financial penalties ranging from 275,000 to 555,000 euros, depending on the timing of their formal withdrawal.
The FIFA disciplinary committee is also considering additional punitive actions against the team. As the schedule currently stands, Iran is slated to face "New Zealand", "Belgium", and "Egypt" during the group stage of the tournament. Since all these matches are hosted in the United States, the refusal to travel remains a significant hurdle for the federation. The situation remains fluid as international sports bodies await a final decision from Tehran.
