If Apple starts producing its iPhone smartphones in the U.S. due to new tariffs introduced by Donald Trump, the price of an iPhone could triple, CNN reported.
A $3500 iPhone?!
According to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, if manufacturing is moved from Asia to the U.S., the price of an iPhone could rise to around $3500.
“If you make the phones in West Virginia or New Jersey, that’s going to be a $3500 iPhone,” said the analyst.
Ives explains that rebuilding the complex and efficient supply chain currently based in Asia within the U.S. would require at least $30 billion and three years of time.
Apple’s billion-dollar concerns
Apple sources key iPhone components — microchips, displays, and other modules — from countries like Taiwan, South Korea, and China. In the U.S., only final assembly is typically done.
In January, Apple’s stock fell by about 25%, due to concerns that U.S. tariffs could negatively impact its supply chains connected to China and Taiwan.
Apple to invest $500 billion in the U.S.
In February, Apple announced plans to invest $500 billion over the next 4 years to expand production outside of China and avoid tariffs introduced under Trump.
iPhone prices may rise even without tariffs
According to Rosenblatt Securities, if Apple passes all the added tariff costs onto the consumer, iPhone prices could rise by 43%.
Counterpoint Research VP of research Neil Shah estimates that prices could increase by around 30%, depending on where the devices are manufactured.
