Substack has started directing readers to web subscriptions directly in its iOS app in the US, TechCrunch reported. This feature appeared after the App Store rules changed in May following the Epic Games case. Now it is possible to subscribe on the web via an external payment link without leaving the app.
Substack offers two options to the reader: Apple in-app payment or web payment. The in-app price can be automatically set higher to cover Apple's commission, and the creator can disable this feature. The platform continues to take its 10% share from the web subscription price.
The update applies only to new subscriptions; it is not possible to completely abandon Apple's payment system. According to Substack, more than 30,000 publications have enabled in-app payments, and initial tests have increased paid subscriptions, but no exact figures were given. The company is also considering switching to AI and UK regulations.
