WOWCube: the digital Rubik’s cube becomes a gaming console

Spin Master and Cubios have developed an innovative gadget called WOWCube — a new digital evolution of the classic Rubik’s cube. The 2×2 cube replaces traditional colored squares with 24 small LCD displays. First revealed in 2016, the device is now officially available for pre-order.

The most fascinating part about WOWCube is that it can not only be twisted like a regular cube but also used to play games such as Cut the Rope, 2048, and the classic Space Invaders. Built-in sensors detect tilting and shaking — features that add interactivity to the gameplay.

Through the WOWCube app store, users can download new games and features. The cube connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing the installation of both paid and free apps. Developers are also provided with an SDK, making it easier to create their own games and interactive applications for the platform.

The device isn’t limited to gaming — it also includes daily-use functions such as timers, live aquarium wallpapers, weather updates, reminders, and stock price widgets.

The battery life is up to five hours, and charging is done through a special docking station. The retail price is $299 (around 3.6 million Uzbek soums). According to the company, the first deliveries are expected before Catholic Christmas.

Analysts believe WOWCube may go down in history as one of the first devices to successfully merge classic toys with modern technology.
