A Munich court found that ChatGPT violated the copyright of musicians, including German rock musician Herbert Grenemayer. This was reported by Pravilmag.
The court found that OpenAI used nine German songs in teaching artificial intelligence, including Grenemayer's hits "Mayenner" and "Bochum." The company undertook to compensate for damages for the use of copyrighted materials.
OpenAI emphasizes that the company's neural networks do not store and copy specific works, but rather reflect what they learned based on a collection of all the data used in teaching. According to the German court, memorizing and repeating lyrics in chatbot responses is a copyright infringement on the use of musical compositions.
The lawsuit against OpenAI was filed by the German Society for the Protection of the Copyright of Music GEMA, which includes composers, authors of the text, and publishers.
