Apple Ads and Maps under review in Europe
The European Union’s competition authorities are reviewing Apple’s Apple Ads and Apple Maps services. The goal is to determine whether these services must follow the Digital Markets Act rules as core platforms. Apple has stated that its services should be exempt from these requirements.

Under the Digital Markets Act, companies with more than 45 million users can be designated as “gatekeepers.” Apple noted that Apple Ads and Maps have a small share in Europe and face strong competition from other companies.

The European Commission has 45 working days to decide on the designation. If deemed a “gatekeeper,” Apple will have six months to adjust its services to comply with the rules.

Apple Maps and Ads have limited use in Europe compared to Google, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok. Apple also said these services do not have important tools to directly connect businesses and users.
