Qwen project leader unexpectedly leaves Alibaba

Unexpected personnel changes have occurred at Chinese tech giant Alibaba. Junyang Lin, a leading expert responsible for developing Qwen models—one of the company's key AI projects—has stepped down. This news was announced shortly after the company introduced its new Qwen 3.5 small models. Reports 3dnews.ru.
Junyang Lin had been with the Alibaba team since 2019 and had been leading the Qwen division since April 2023. His departure caused a stir among colleagues and industry experts. Chen Cheng, a project participant, expressed deep sadness on social media, hinting that Lin's departure might not have been his personal choice.
Alibaba's Qwen models are considered among the most promising in the AI field today. Even Elon Musk has praised the high efficiency and "intelligence density" of these small models. This change comes as the company competes with global rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. So far, Alibaba management or Junyang Lin himself have not provided an official comment.
