OpenAI has announced that it will shut down Sora, its video generation platform launched at the end of 2024. The company said it is saying goodbye to the tool and will soon provide users with a timeline for closing both the app and developer API, along with information on how creators can preserve their work. The decision also appears to end OpenAI’s high-profile partnership with Disney. According to earlier reports, Disney had planned to invest $1 billion in OpenAI, license its characters for use in Sora, and distribute AI-generated video content through Disney Plus. With Sora now being discontinued, that deal is reportedly falling apart as well.
OpenAI has not publicly given a full explanation for the move. However, recent signals suggest the company is narrowing its focus as competition in artificial intelligence intensifies. Reports say OpenAI is now concentrating on a broader ChatGPT desktop product, as well as tools such as Codex and its AI browser.
