AI-powered road pothole detection technology

Potholes are a serious problem for both drivers and urban infrastructure. As vehicles are now equipped with complex sensors, they are becoming tools for quickly identifying road defects and reporting them to city administrations. While Waymo and Waze have launched pilot projects in this area, Samsara is taking this process to a new level with its "Ground Intelligence" AI system, reports Techcrunch.com reports .
Using data collected over a decade from cameras mounted on trucks, Samsara has developed a model that identifies potholes and analyzes how quickly their condition deteriorates. The company states that its system has a much broader reach than Waymo robotaxis, as millions of trucks travel the same routes regularly. This allows for tracking how potholes change over time.
Having signed contracts with major clients like the City of Chicago, Samsara aims to help cities fix infrastructure problems faster through this technology. The "Ground Intelligence" system can identify not only potholes but also other urban issues such as graffiti, broken barriers, or hanging power lines. This process helps city services shift from a reactive to a proactive approach.
The company plans to use this surveillance network in other areas as well. For example, the "Waste Intelligence" product helps monitor waste collection services, while the "ridership management" system is designed to ensure the safety of school buses and public transport. With these solutions, Samsara aims to make city management more efficient and digital.
