Rosatom has prepared the first RITM-200 reactor for the Leningrad icebreaker

The state corporation Rosatom has manufactured the first RITM-200 nuclear reactor intended for the Leningrad nuclear-powered icebreaker. The control assembly was completed on May 14, 2026, at the ZiO-Podolsk plant in the Moscow region. This is the final stage of preparing the reactor unit, where all components are assembled with high precision and the product is made ready for installation on the vessel. This was reported by Ixbt.com reports .

Construction of the Leningrad icebreaker began at the shipyard in January 2024. This reactor is the 13th unit in the RITM-200 series produced by Russian nuclear industry specialists. Currently, 15 more units of this series are in various stages of production.

According to Rosatom, the energy system of the Leningrad vessel will consist of two RITM-200 reactors. The second reactor is currently being prepared for hydraulic tests, where the strength and tightness of the hull will be checked under high pressure. After that, its control assembly will also be carried out.

RITM-200 is the newest and most compact nuclear reactor designed for the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet. It is significantly more powerful than previous solutions while being 1.5 times more compact. This allows icebreakers of the 22220 project to operate effectively both in thick ice and in northern river channels, increasing the efficiency of cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route.
