Berkelium targets prepared for synthesis of element 119 in Russia

As part of Russia's "New Nuclear and Energy Technologies" national project, key components for synthesizing element 119 of the periodic table have been developed. Specialists at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) successfully produced the berkelium-249 isotope and formed accelerator target segments from it. This was reported by Ixbt.com reports.

To accomplish this complex task, a special technology for obtaining transplutonium element isotopes was developed at the SM-3 research reactor. The prepared targets will be sent to the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna for experimentation.

Oleg Andreyev, head of the NIIAR department, noted that nearly five years were spent preparing for this experiment. The project involves not only Russian specialists but also scientists from many partner countries. Initial results of the research are expected to be announced in September or October of this year.

The collaboration between NIIAR and JINR on synthesizing superheavy elements has been ongoing for over 20 years. Previously, the joint efforts of these institutions led to the discovery of elements 115, 116, 117, and 118 of the periodic table.
