World's largest offshore DC converter station completed in China

The world's largest offshore converter station has been deployed to the coastal waters of Yangjiang, China. Named "Haifeng Heart," this massive 2-gigawatt platform will serve as a key energy hub connecting two major offshore wind farms to the national power grid, reports Ixbt.com. reports .

This unique facility was designed and built by leading heavy equipment manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC). The vessel carrying the platform departed from Nantong, heading to its final installation site. Once operational, the complex will supply approximately 6 billion kWh of renewable electricity to the grid annually.

The station's dimensions are impressive: 44 meters high (equivalent to an 8-story building), 85.5 meters long, 82.5 meters wide, and weighing 25,000 tons. It is one of the largest energy structures in history, built using advanced methods such as onshore assembly, complex equipment integration, and parallel internal installation.

According to ZPMC expert Yan Bing, the project set six industry records. Offshore wind turbines generate alternating current (AC), but long-distance transmission via subsea cables causes significant losses. The converter station minimizes these losses by converting the current to direct current (DC), enabling efficient utilization of wind resources over 100 kilometers from the coast.
