Apple may remotely restrict iPhone features in case of late payments

Apple is preparing to introduce a new control mechanism for users who purchase devices via installment plans or leasing. Software code discovered in the iOS 27 beta indicates that if a customer fails to make a monthly payment on time, their smartphone will enter a restricted mode. This feature is aimed at ensuring the company's financial stability and improving debt collection efficiency. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
According to the report by ixbt.com, a new component called "App Managed Features" has appeared in the system. It allows for the activation of "Restricted Mode". When this mode is triggered, the iPhone owner loses access to almost all core device capabilities. The smartphone is intended to remain in a limited state until the payment issue is resolved.
What works in Restricted Mode?
According to the code analysis, in restricted mode, the user can only access a few select apps. These include the App Store (for updating payment apps), Settings, Wallet, Passwords, Health, Clock, Magnifier, and Accessibility. It is also expected that emergency calls and certain critical notifications will remain functional, while entertainment features like social media, games, and the camera may be blocked.Furthermore, another security layer called "Partner Finance Lock" has been found in iOS 27. This component prevents the device from being factory reset, resold, or dismantled for parts. This mechanism is integrated with the Find My system, protecting the device from falling into unauthorized hands until the debt is fully paid off.
Apple Upgrade Program and new capabilities
According to Bloomberg, this innovation is linked to the Apple Upgrade program, which is expected to launch in partnership with the financial service Klarna. This program allows users to purchase iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch devices via monthly subscriptions or installments. Given the high demand for Apple products and the growing popularity of installment services in the market, such strict control measures could serve as a model for local retailers in the future. For now, Apple has not officially confirmed the existence of these features. It is also unknown how many days of late payment will trigger the restrictions, or whether this system will remain in the final version of iOS 27. However, such a move by the company indicates that tech giants are striving to gain full financial control over their ecosystems.
