NASA Says International Space Station Could Operate Beyond 2030

For now, the main plan for NASA and its international partners remains unchanged: operations of the station are scheduled to end at the close of 2030. After that, specialists will need nearly two more years to prepare for the safe, controlled deorbiting of the ISS.

Technical Capabilities and Modular Systems

However, Dana Weigel noted that the station’s technical condition makes it possible to use it beyond the designated deadline. According to her, the complex is currently operating normally and has a considerable structural safety margin.

“If we receive different guidance from a legislative standpoint, we are ready to adapt to the situation and change our course of action,” Weigel said. She also added that many of the ISS’s key systems have a modular design and can be replaced when necessary.

Future Plans and Orbital History

The possibility of extending the station’s operations is not being discussed for the first time. Earlier, it was reported that Russia and the United States were considering options for keeping the ISS operating until 2030. At the same time, Russia plans to launch the first module of its national orbital station into orbit in 2028.

The International Space Station has been orbiting Earth since November 1998. Over nearly three decades, it has become the largest crewed laboratory in human history. The station currently has a mass of 435 tons, or approximately 470 tons together with the spacecraft docked to it.
