Game Developers’ Fund Raises $100,000 in Three Days

The Game Industry Hardship Fund charity drive, created to support video game industry workers facing serious difficulties in recent years, raised more than $100,000 in just three days. The initiative was launched by Necrosoft Games and the United Videogame Workers union (UVW-CWA), with the funds going to specialists who have lost their jobs. According to Ixbt.com the website reports.

According to ixbt.com, the charity campaign offers users 127 games worth more than $1,000 in total, including A Short Hike and Arranger. The minimum donation required to receive the bundle is $10. After the initial goal of $100,000 was reached in a short time, the organizers raised the target to $200,000 and extended the campaign by another 10 days.

How Financial Aid Is Distributed

The funds raised are being distributed by the UVW-CWA union among video game industry workers in the United States and Canada who lost their jobs within the past two years. The payments are intended to cover essential everyday expenses such as taxes, rent and groceries.

A two-tier support mechanism has been introduced to provide assistance:

  • payments of less than $1,000 for minor expenses;
  • assistance ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for major expenses requiring additional review.

Industry Crisis and Layoffs

The charity initiative comes amid large-scale layoffs affecting the video game industry worldwide. Over the past few years, major studios have carried out mass layoffs on a regular basis. A clear example is the Xbox division, which has cut approximately 3,200 employees.

According to Necrosoft Games, approximately 33% of industry professionals have lost their jobs over the past two years. Experts say the situation has been further complicated by plans from some companies to replace production processes with automation and AI technologies.

At present, the United Videogame Workers fund is financed mainly through this campaign and union membership dues. Organization representatives said they are not currently accepting direct donations, but are exploring the possibility of introducing this form of support in the future. UVW-CWA continues to defend workers’ rights and interests amid rapid changes in the game development market.
