In 2025, our country’s higher education system again experienced a significant and unique process — the number of registered applicants reached the lowest level in the last seven years. According to the State Test Center, this year the total number of registered applicants was 732,411. This figure shows a noticeable decline compared to the recent trend.
This year, the preparation phase for test exams by applicants is taking place in a narrower scope than in previous years. The reason is an additional reduction in the number of participants due to those who did not pay the fees. This means that the opportunities and competitive environment have changed for each applicant.
Distribution by language of instruction: Uzbek remains firmly leading
This year also, the absolute majority of applicants registered to take the test in Uzbek — 644,027 young people. Those taking the exam in Russian were 71,476, in Karakalpak — 14,959, and in other languages — 1,949. These figures indicate the country’s multiethnic educational environment, language diversification, and changing demand trends.
Gender composition: an interesting difference
Regarding the gender composition, this year the number of female applicants significantly outweighs the number of males: 386,112 women and 346,299 men registered. This is also seen as a new modern social trend, signalling increased female engagement in education and progress toward gender balance.
7‑year statistics: interesting numbers and analysis
Over the last 7 years, the number of applicants varied year to year:
- 2019 — 1,066,925
- 2020 — 1,484,085 (historic maximum)
- 2021 — 948,211
- 2022 — 1,214,232
- 2023 — 1,018,007
- 2024 — 894,279
- 2025 — 732,411 (the lowest figure)
Behind these figures lie demographic changes, interest in studying abroad, demand for private and non-state educational institutions, and also an increase in test fee amounts. In addition, this year’s decline is related to the post‑pandemic selection by parents and youth, dynamics in the job market and professions, and education system reforms.
Final deadline to pay: timing is crucial
For applicants wishing to take the test, the final deadline is today, June 26, by 23:59. If the payment is not made, the applicant loses the right to participate in the test. Therefore, this date is of decisive importance for every youth and parent.
