Head of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan Saida Mirziyoyeva met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. The meeting took place on October 9 and was organized within the framework of the European Union’s Global Gateway Forum. Saida Mirziyoyeva announced this on her official social media page.
“I am very pleased with my meeting with Ms. von der Leyen. I am confident that cooperation between Uzbekistan and Europe will continue to strengthen consistently,” Saida Mirziyoyeva wrote in her statement.
The Global Gateway Forum is an important international platform dedicated to the European Union’s external investment initiatives. It is being held on October 9–10 in Brussels. According to the organizers, this year’s theme focuses on global connectivity and infrastructure development amid geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges. This initiative is part of the European Union’s plan to deepen global cooperation through “green economy,” digital technologies, and sustainable infrastructure.
It is reported that during the meeting, the two sides discussed prospects for cooperation in the fields of education, culture, innovation, and information technologies. Saida Mirziyoyeva emphasized that relations with the European Union are of strategic importance for Uzbekistan. In her view, partnership in sustainable development, women’s rights, youth education, and social projects should reach a new stage.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in turn, highly appreciated the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan and expressed her readiness to support projects aimed at developing civil society and education in the country.
For reference, this is not the first dialogue between Saida Mirziyoyeva and Ursula von der Leyen. Earlier, in April of this year, they also met in Samarkand during the “Central Asia – European Union” summit. At that time, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev introduced his eldest daughter to Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council António Costa.
According to experts, Saida Mirziyoyeva’s meeting in Brussels is considered an important step in Uzbekistan’s foreign policy direction toward Europe. Today, the European Union is one of Uzbekistan’s largest partners, with numerous joint programs in investment, “green energy,” education, and gender equality.
