Half of the birds on our planet are on the verge of extinction

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed 48,646 new endangered species in the updated Red Book. This brings the total number of endangered species to 172,620, CNN reported.

Experts note that as a result of climate change, melting sea ice, and deforestation, many species, including Arctic seals and half of the world's birds, are on the verge of extinction. For seals, sea ice is important for raising offspring, and their disappearance also threatens polar bears.

The world's bird population has declined by 61 percent - in 2016 this figure was 44 percent. The main reasons are habitat degradation and deforestation.

However, there are positive examples: as a result of green sea turtle conservation programs, their numbers have increased by 28% in recent decades. Experts call for strengthening global cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
