99% of Uzbekistan's population has mobile communication

In recent years, Uzbekistan’s digital infrastructure has been rapidly developing — 99 percent of the country’s settlements are now covered by mobile communication. This was announced on October 21 during a videoconference chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev dedicated to the development of artificial intelligence technologies.

According to the President, as global demand for artificial intelligence continues to grow, maintaining competitiveness requires special focus on three key areas — infrastructure, open data, and workforce training.

Over the past eight years, more than 300,000 kilometers of fiber-optic communication lines have been built across the country, and almost all populated areas are now connected to mobile internet. Additionally, seven modern data centers have been launched to process and store large volumes of data.

Next year, 100 AI-related projects are planned to be implemented in healthcare, energy, banking and finance, customs, taxation, transportation, mining, and agriculture sectors.

President Mirziyoyev emphasized that powerful supercomputers are essential for these efforts, as current capacities can only support small-scale projects. As a result, entrepreneurs are spending millions of dollars to use foreign data infrastructure.

Therefore, $50 million has been allocated this year to purchase 16 supercomputers. Next year, this amount will be doubled.

According to the President, developing digital infrastructure is not only a means of economic growth but also a key step toward Uzbekistan’s technological independence and a competitive future.
