A new law aimed at protecting the rights of women and children has been submitted for discussion in Uzbekistan. The draft law proposes a sharp increase in fines for marriage with minors.
The draft prohibits marriages between relatives, uncles and aunts with their nieces and nephews, as well as cousins. Adopted or foster children are exempt from this restriction.
In cases of pregnancy or childbirth, the local district or city mayor may lower the marriage age by up to one year.
Those who marry a minor face penalties: fines from 20,600,000 to 41,200,000 soms, 240–300 hours of community service, or up to 2 years of corrective labor. Under current law, fines range from 8,240,000 to 12,360,000 soms, and community service up to 240 hours.
