Uzbekistan plans to officially establish Rescuers’ Day

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) has drafted a bill to establish Rescuers’ Day in Uzbekistan. Based on an analysis of the sector’s development and history over past years, and taking into account the date when the President of Uzbekistan adopted decrees and resolutions aimed at fundamentally improving the field, the draft proposes designating 20 October as “Uzbekistan Rescuers’ Day.”
The main purpose of the bill is to widely promote the importance of the rescuer profession among the public and to comprehensively support qualified personnel in this sector. If adopted, “Rescuers’ Day” will be officially celebrated in the country every year on 20 October. The holiday is also expected to be observed by staff and non-staff rescue units at economic facilities, as well as by volunteer rescuers.
For reference, in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and the Republic of Korea, special attention is paid to this profession, and “Rescuers’ Day” has been introduced nationwide as a professional holiday. In addition, the international community designated the second Wednesday of October in 1989 by the UN, and 13 October in 2017 as the “International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.”
Thus, if this law is adopted in Uzbekistan, attention to the rescuers’ profession will increase further and their importance will be recognized with great respect.
