French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a project to mobilize more young volunteers "to strengthen the army." He tasked the government and the military with drafting relevant proposals, according to Le Monde.

Macron emphasized the "accumulation of threats" forcing France to adapt. He stated that by 2030, the country aims to have 210,000 active military personnel and 80,000 reservists.

He also called for a "strategic awakening of Europe" and proposed updating strategic priorities for defense.

"Let’s not deceive ourselves. The conflict in Ukraine won’t end tomorrow or the day after," said Macron.

The French President stressed that peace and security in Europe cannot exist "without Europeans and their involvement in negotiations."

"Our immediate task is to provide Ukraine with the means to endure and to enter any future negotiations from a position of strength. Once the fighting ceases, our role will be to ensure that Ukraine has guarantees against a resurgence of war on its territory and to secure our own safety," Macron stated.

Macron urged the government and the armed forces’ staff to develop proposals by May to "allow young volunteers to train and strengthen their ranks in the armed forces."

"We must better identify volunteers, train them, and be prepared to mobilize them when necessary to support our troops in France or abroad. After building a professional army, we now need to mobilize professional reserve forces to provide additional support and reinforcement," he added.
