In the United States, government employees have received letters offering voluntary resignation with an eight-month salary payout. This move is seen as a significant step toward reducing the size of the government, reports BBC.
Immediately after taking office, Donald Trump declared the “coronavirus era” over and mandated that employees working remotely due to the pandemic return to their offices. Now, they are being offered voluntary resignation.
Millions of Americans received official notices stating they must decide by February 6. If they choose to resign, they will receive eight months’ salary and retain all benefits.
According to the Trump administration’s estimates, approximately 10% of the more than 2 million government employees—around 200,000 people—are expected to accept the offer. Supporters of the president believe this deal could save the government up to $100 billion.
The Office of Personnel Management has warned that those who choose to stay may face job cuts in the future.
