Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to hold talks with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, but the issue of the Ukrainian president's legitimacy needs to be considered, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
According to a Kremlin spokesman, Putin "has repeatedly stated his readiness to hold talks with Zelensky if necessary."
"At the same time, it is necessary to seriously discuss the legalization of agreements, taking into account the fact that Zelensky may cast doubt on his legitimacy," Peskov added.
Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed that Zelensky's legitimacy "has expired, because new elections have not been held in Ukraine."
Moscow must understand “with whom it is possible and necessary to establish relations” before signing legally binding documents, the Russian leader said.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, 2025, Zelensky announced that he would meet only with one Russian, Vladimir Putin, as part of the peace talks.
A day earlier, NBC reported that the United States had not invited the Ukrainian delegation to the talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia, as Washington plans to hold separate bilateral meetings with representatives of Moscow and Kiev, and then organize a joint meeting.
“This shows that we are working with both Russia and Ukraine with the same level of activity. We want to stop the killings and achieve a lasting peace,” one of the channel’s interlocutors said.
NBC’s source close to the Ukrainian president confirmed that Kiev has not yet been invited to the meeting between Washington and Moscow in Saudi Arabia.
