The administration of US President Donald Trump has suspended the processing of all immigration applications from immigrants from Latin America and Ukraine who were allowed to enter the United States during the time of former President Joe Biden. This was reported by CBS News, citing two American officials.
The decision of the US government affects immigrants who are in the process of applying for various immigration benefits that allow them to remain in the country legally.
"The processing of applications has been suspended indefinitely, during which time officials will be engaged in reviewing applications for fraud, as well as improving the verification procedures," the report says.
The ban covers several programs of the Biden administration that allowed foreigners to temporarily stay in the United States for humanitarian reasons. Among these programs is Uniting for Ukraine, which allowed Ukrainians to enter the United States on a temporary basis if they had financial sponsors.
Another program, known as CHNV, is for immigrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Cuba who have sponsors in the United States. A third program is for immigrants from Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, and Cuba who have relatives in the United States.
In January, the Trump administration suspended the admission of new immigrants under programs that allow foreigners to temporarily reside in the United States, including the Uniting for Ukraine program. At the same time, some of the foreigners were already in the United States and were waiting to receive permanent residency.
"Since most of the foreigners who came to the United States under the three programs mentioned above received only temporary work permits and two-year protection from deportation, some of them applied for other immigration benefits," the lawyers said.
However, US Citizenship and Immigration Services officials have decided not to review applications for these programs or any other benefits if they were filed by immigrants who were allowed to enter during the Biden era.
According to CBS News, about 240 thousand Ukrainians came to the United States under the sponsorship of their citizens under the "Unity for Ukraine" program before Trump took office. 530 thousand people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela entered the United States through the CHNV program.
