On Friday evening, February 28, shortly after unsuccessful negotiations with the head of the White House, Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave an interview to the American Fox News channel. During the conversation with the journalist, he said that he wanted to maintain partnership relations with the United States and was ready to sign an agreement on natural resources, but he was convinced that this should be the first step towards security guarantees for Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelensky: “We do not want to fight”
“Nobody wants the war to end more than Ukrainians,” Zelensky said. However, he continued, the Ukrainian people want a just and lasting peace, which is impossible without the security guarantees of the United States. Without it, Ukrainians fear that “Putin will come back tomorrow,” because the Russian president has repeatedly violated agreements, the Ukrainian leader emphasized.
Zelensky said that his conflict with Trump was “bad for both sides,” but he did not think that he had “done anything bad” and did not need to apologize. Asked if he was ready to return to the White House now to continue negotiations, the Ukrainian president replied: “No.”
During the studio interview, a video was shown of Donald Trump saying about Zelensky after the meeting at the White House: “He wants to continue fighting, to continue fighting.”
“We do not want to fight,” the Ukrainian president explained in the video. “I respect my citizens, our soldiers. Therefore, I cannot return until I have clear information about when and what guarantees Ukraine will receive.”
