NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called yesterday's disagreement between Trump and Zelensky "regrettable" in an interview with the BBC. He told the Ukrainian president that it was necessary to restore relations with the White House.
"I have already spoken to President Zelensky twice on the phone. I told him that the United States, Ukraine and Europe must work together to bring Ukraine to a lasting peace," Rutte said.
The NATO Secretary General stressed that he could not disclose all the details of his conversations with the Ukrainian president, but that he "made it clear to him that President Trump must respect what he has done for Ukraine." In particular, he recalled the Javelin anti-tank missiles delivered by the US to Kiev during Trump's first presidency in 2018.
Rutte also noted that the US president wants a lasting peace in Ukraine, but at the same time the White House expects Canada and its European NATO partners to spend more on defense.
"I am convinced that the US wants to lead Ukraine towards a lasting peace... But for this they need to be convinced that we are all working together. It is important that President Zelensky finds a way to restore relations with the American president and the American top leadership," the NATO Secretary General said.
