A separatist group called the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) attacked a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan, Reuters reported. The train driver was injured in the shooting and passengers were taken hostage.
Details of the attack
According to reports, the train was attacked while traveling from the city of Quetta to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The AFP agency, citing Quetta city officials, said the militants stopped the train, blew up the tracks, and are now controlling the train. More than 450 passengers have been taken hostage. Police and security forces have declared a state of emergency and nearby hospitals have been alerted to provide assistance.
Terrorist activities in Balochistan
Balochistan is one of Pakistan's largest and poorest provinces, and has been the scene of a separatist movement for many years. The Balochistan Liberation Army was formed in the 1970s and has been waging an armed struggle against the Pakistani government. The BLA is designated a terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and China.
Security issues in Balochistan
The current incident is a further sign of the region's deepening security problems. On November 9, 2024, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a railway station in Balochistan province. This attack killed 24 people. Not long after, the Balochistan Liberation Army carried out another horrific attack.
What is the Pakistani government doing?
The Pakistani government and security forces are working to foil the attack and free the hostages. Government officials have vowed to retaliate strongly against the BLA militants.
Terrorist activities in Balochistan could further worsen security in the region. This incident is receiving serious attention not only from Pakistan but also from the international community.
