Washington is calling for a ceasefire, especially a short-term one, to end the war in Ukraine. US State Department Secretary Marco Rubio said in an interview with CBS on Sunday, March 16, that the continuation of hostilities would hinder the negotiation process.
Speaking about the visit of Donald Trump's special envoy Stephen Witkoff to Russia and his meeting with Vladimir Putin, Rubio noted that "Witkoff's meeting with Putin was credible," but made it clear that, based on the results of the talks, Russia had not taken any concrete steps towards peace talks. According to Rubio, Putin may have decided to delay the peace process, but their talks did not lead to any official statements.
Rubio also said that there is another plan for ending the hostilities. "Plan A is to stop the fighting and move on to Plan B. For this, all sides must come to the negotiating table," he said. In his opinion, in order to end the war, the first thing to do is to stop the fighting, and only then will they have the opportunity to negotiate. "If the war continues, there will be no negotiations," Rubio added.
Rubio also stressed that direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are unlikely. "It is very difficult to agree to end the war when both sides are shooting at each other. That is why President Trump wants a ceasefire," he said.
G7 countries threaten sanctions
The Group of Seven (G7) countries, meeting in Canada on March 14, discussed imposing additional sanctions on Russia if it refuses to cease fire in Ukraine. "If Russia does not agree to a ceasefire, additional pressure will be applied, including sanctions, oil price caps, and additional assistance to Ukraine," the statement from the foreign ministers said.
The G7 countries also called for the implementation of clear and credible security mechanisms to ensure a ceasefire. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
