The US wants to recognize Crimea as Russian territory. Why?
The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of recognizing Crimea as Russian territory. This was reported by the Semafor publication, citing two of its sources.

Discussions within the framework of peace talks

According to the publication's sources, the issue of recognizing Crimea as Russian territory is being discussed as part of a future peace agreement to cease hostilities in Ukraine. The Trump administration is also reportedly considering the possibility of appealing to the UN on this issue.

Donald Trump had previously announced on March 18 that he would hold a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss territorial issues. Also on March 17, White House officials said they were discussing how the borders would be demarcated after peace with Ukraine was established.

Ukraine's position and Zelensky's attitude

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his opinion on this issue, stressing that the official recognition of any territory as part of Russia is a "red line" for Kiev. However, he acknowledged that some territories could remain under de facto Russian control after the end of hostilities.

Impact on international relations

If the US recognizes Crimea as Russian territory, this could cause major disputes in international relations. It is not yet known how NATO and the European Union will react to this, but the Ukrainian government and Western countries are expected to strongly oppose such a decision.

So far, Washington has not issued an official statement on this issue.
