German intelligence: Russia is preparing for a large-scale war against NATO
A new report prepared by the German Federal Intelligence Service and the Bundeswehr has indicated that Russia may be ready for a large-scale military conflict with NATO by the 2030s. According to the report, Russian President Vladimir Putin considers this war to be systematic and is preparing for it thoroughly.

Russia's military potential is growing

According to German intelligence, Russia currently does not have enough forces to directly confront NATO. However, according to the Lithuanian special service, Moscow may conduct a limited military operation against several NATO member states and test the alliance's response.

The report notes:
  • Russia is recovering from military losses during the war with Ukraine.
  • Russia's military industry has begun to produce more weapons than the front needs.
  • After the war in Ukraine ends, Russian troops may soon be directed to the borders of the Baltic states.

Defense spending has increased sharply

The Russian government has sharply increased defense spending during the war. Over the past three years, 22 trillion rubles have been spent on the army and weapons production. In the 2025 budget, 13.2 trillion rubles (30% of total spending) are allocated for military purposes.

In September 2024, Vladimir Putin decided to increase the size of the Russian army to 2.38 million people. This will make the Russian armed forces the second largest in the world after China.

NATO ready for Russian threat

On March 26, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stark warning against possible Russian aggression.

"If someone makes the mistake of attacking Poland or any of our allies and thinks they can get away with it, they will face the full force of NATO forces. Our response will be devastating," Rutte said during a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw.

NATO members are continuing to ramp up military preparations against the Russian threat, focusing in particular on strengthening military capabilities in the Baltics and Eastern Europe.

A German intelligence report suggests that Russia is seriously preparing for a full-scale war against NATO and that Russia could turn to the Baltic states after the war in Ukraine ends. NATO, however, is strengthening its military forces, expressing its readiness to respond effectively to such threats.

If tensions between Russia and NATO increase further in the coming years, a new conflict could erupt in Europe.
